“Police take to streets in cuts protest”

“Scores of off-duty officers descended on London for a day of action against Government spending cuts they fear will risk the safety of the nation.

Some of those who travelled up from the South West left home at 4am and were not expecting to get back until well after midnight.

More than 2,000 officers attended a rally in Westminster before heading on for a meeting with MPs behind closed doors.

They heard speeches from Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, TUC boss Brendan Barber and Sir Hugh Orde, president of the Association of Chief Police Officers.”
